Understanding Dogs Part 28 – How To Use An Exercise Pen For House Training Your Dog?
Although a puppy can last in his crate for the night when he is asleep, you can not leave a puppy in his crate for needs of house training for more time than 4 hours at a time in the day.
Your young dog will soil his crate, which definitely is not a habit you need to create.
If your schedule is such that you cannot keep an eye fixed on Tommy in the day or return home to let the baby dog out in time, the choice is an exercise pen.
An X-pen is smart confinement and uses the same principle as a crate, except it’s bigger and has no top. An X-pen can also be used out of doors. For the super sportsman who either climbs over or jumps out of the X-pen, you do have to cover the X-pen. First, you want to procure an X-pen comparable to the dimensions of your dog.
For instance, for a dog the scale of a Labrador, the X-pen must be ten sq. feet. Set up the X-pen where the puppy will be confined during your absence.
To get your dog cushty in his X-pen, follow the same procedure as you did in introducing him to his crate. When Tommy is “at home” in the X-pen and you are prepared to leave him for the day, cover 1/3 of the area with papers for Tommy to use to get rid of on ( no, he isn’t going to read the sports section ).
Cover 1/3 of the leftover area with a blanket, and leave 1/3 revealed. The natural wish of your dog is to keep his sleeping area clean.
Tommy wants to have access to water in the day, so put his water dish on the revealed area in the corner of the X-pen ( some water is certain to splash out, and the revealed floor is simple to scrub ).
Before you leave, place a pair toys on Tommy’s blanket, put him into X-pen with a dog biscuit, and leave while he is occupied with the biscuit. Don’t make a big thing out of leaving – simply leave.
Some folks attempt to rig up confinement areas by obstructing off parts of a room or basement or whatever. Theoretically, this works, but it does permit Tommy to gnaw the baseboard, corners of cupboards, or anything more he’ll get his teeth on.
Similarly , leaving a dog on a concrete surface isn’t a great idea. There’s something about concrete that impedes house training ; many dogs do not understand why it can not be used as a toilet area.
Concrete also causes havoc on the elbows of big breeds. You may wish to constrict your dog to part of a room with baby gates.
This option works rather well for some folks and some dogs, but recall it’s no holds barred for whatever items Tommy can access.
A lot of gnaw toys are a must! Whatever barrier you resolve to try, do not use an accordion-type gate – he could stick his head thru it and probably strangle himself.
You will find that in the longer term, your least pricey option – as is so regularly the case – is the correct way from the start.
Do not be penny-wise and pound silly by scrimping on the necessities at risk of jeopardizing dearer items.
Splurging for an X-pen now will often save your cash on your house improvement budget later down the line.
